KYLE GERMAN WINS CANADIAN
CLUB PRO CHAMPIONSHIP

Head Professional Kyle German of Point Roberts GC
survived a one-hole playoff in blustery conditions
Wednesday to win the Titleist-FootJoy Canadian Club
Professional Championship at PGA Golf Club in
Port St. Lucie, Florida.

German posted an even-par round of 72 in
his final round for a three-round total of
3-under-par, good enough for a tie
with Marc Girouard of St-Sauveur, Que.
In the playoff, German had to hit a hybrid
club into the 18th green on his second
shot and wound up making bogey. But it was
good enough to earn a cheque for $12,000 in
the biggest win of his career.

German wins an exemption into next year’s
Canadian Open at Glen Abbey GC with the win
and said afterward he was thrilled.
“Playing for your national championship
as a club professional . . . it doesn’t get
any bigger than this,” he said “I feel really
good to have been able to pull it off.”

German’s play throughout the 54-hole championship
was stellar – and all the better considering the disaster he had on one hole. On his 9th hole of the first round, the 18th hole at the PGA Golf Club’s Wanamaker Course, German made one of his only poor driver swings of the week, lost a ball, hit into an unplayable lie, had a horrendous lie for another shot and ended four-putting for a 10, six over par. Make that into a par and he would have been 9-under for the championship, instead of the 3-under he ended up posting.

He was able to laugh about it the next day, though, after making birdie 3 in the second round, so the golf gods evened things up somewhat.

“You had to be really careful with your approach shots into these greens,” he said. “They’re really crowned and quite fast and undulating so if you had to chip it was hard to get it close.”

Wind was also a big factor, particularly on the last day. “We had about 30 miles an hour of wind out there today,” he said. “It was two and a half clubs most of the day.”

An example was the dastardly 18th, which played into the teeth of the wind. For his last hole in regulation, German had 168 yards to the pin. “I stood on a 4-iron and barely got it to the front of the green,” he said. But, playing in the final group, he made the par and got into the playoff.

German credited some new equipment from Titleist for his success, saying he picked up a new 909 D3 driver from Titleist reps while in Florida that he hit very well all week, along with some fairway woods and a hybrid. “I guess it’s all about the equipment,” he quipped.

Earlier, German spearheaded a strong performance by the PGA of BC zone team in the inter-zone team competition, with BC finishing a strong second, two strokes behind the winning team from Ontario. The BC team of German, Scott Dickson of Shaughnessy G&CC, Bill Kelly of Glacier Greens GC and Dave Bolton of Savage Creek GC, each won $400 from the team purse for their runner-up finish.

Dickson continued his strong play in this championship, posting an 8th place finish with a 3-over final total. And Rob Anderson of The Harvest GC also managed another good finish in the CPC, ending up 7-over for the three rounds and earning an exemption into next year’s event with a T-13 finish.

A total of 12 BC professionals were in the field of 107 players from across Canada, having qualified through their play in the PGA of BC Championship at Quilchena G&CC in August. Ten BC pros earned cheques, including German, Dickson, Anderson, Daryl Stubbs of King’s Links, Bill Kelly, Greg Pidlaski of Kelowna G&CC, Dave Bolton, James Legault of Seymour Creek GC, Jeremy Johnson of Invermere, and Levi Arcega of Golf Town Coquitlam.
